Shelby County OATS Riders and Volunteers Voice Importance of Public Transportation in Missouri to Legislators
February 25, 2009
On Tuesday, February 17, OATS riders and volunteers from Shelby County visited the Capitol to remind legislators of the importance of Missouri’s public transportation system. Those that visited did so at their own expense. The Shelby residents were just one of several counties that decided to make the trip this year.
OATS, Inc. provided over 1.5 million one-way trips during the 2008 fiscal year - 5,800 which occurred in Shelby

County alone. In the same time period OATS also traveled more than 13.3 million miles across Missouri. These trips were made to ensure that thousands of Missourians had access to medical treatment, jobs, training, education and basic human services.
Those who visited the capitol on behalf of OATS, Inc. met with legislators to express their appreciation and convey the importance of public transportation to their communities, in hopes of encouraging support of future funding. Shelby County attendees (pictured here with Senator Wes Shoemyer from left to right) included Lestel Harvey, Jeana Fox, Catherine Wiseman, Lucille Kyle, Onolee Hussing, Joyce Luntsford, and OATS driver Diane Hicks. These riders and volunteers credited OATS, Inc. as “a very important organization that many people rely on. OATS allows those of us who don’t drive to maintain our independence.”
Senator Wes Shoemyer says “OATS is one of those services that keeps people connected and active in their communities. It is essential to their well-being.”
OATS is one of several agencies that provides public transportation in Missouri, and serves 87 Missouri Counties. They are a non-for-profit corporation providing specialized transportation for not just senior citizens, but also people with disabilities and the rural general public. OATS, Inc. is funded, in part, by an allotment of federal funds from the Missouri Department of Transportation, through contracts with the Area Agencies on Aging, rider donations and private contributions. All donations are tax deductible.
