OATS, Inc. Celebrates Monroe County Driver for 15 Years of Service
March 29, 2010
It was 1995 when Shirley Ensor began her career as a driver for OATS, Inc. One day while talking with a neighbor about their children getting older, the neighbor mentioned that she recently started working for OATS. To Shirley, driving for OATS sounded like something she would enjoy.
What Shirley appreciates most about her job are the people that ride her bus. “They're
funny and smart and entertaining… and they’re all different. I hope I get to live as long as many of them.”
When it comes to qualities of an OATS driver, Shirley says those who are a good match should be patient and giving. She knows that for many OATS passengers she is the one person they see regularly. “You have to have a smile on your face every day, because often your smile is what makes their day.” Shirley says the best OATS drivers are upbeat, personable and professional.
In her spare time, Shirley loves to travel, go to garage sales and flea markets, and visit her family. She is very involved with her three grandchildren (2 boys and 1 girl), and has rekindled her involvement in 4-H to participate with them. Having grown up on a farm and marrying a farmer, Shirley was comfortable driving an OATS bus right away, saying it isn't a lot different than driving a tractor.
When asked about working for OATS, Shirley indicated that she enjoys the flexibility of scheduling and that it allows her to work part-time. She makes it a point to keep OATS informed of her personal commitments, and feels they always attempt to accommodate her schedule. “We all work together and it’s great,” says Shirley. “I just hope OATS is around when I don’t feel comfortable doing a lot of driving someday.”
Rider Sue Mefford from Monroe City, Missouri says “Shirley is a very nice person… is fun to be around and is a good driver. I like her a lot.”
